MLSsoccer.com senior editor Simon Borg videotaped arm-wrestling co-worker over cake pop | THE SIDELINE

Simon Borg arm wrestles David Gass

It’s unclear if Major League Soccer’s Disciplinary Committee will hand down any punishment in the wake of a video that surfaced Monday showing one of MLSsoccer.com’s leading editors arm-wrestling a co-worker over a commemorative cake pop.

The 16-second video shows senior editor Simon Borg arm-wrestling and verbally intimidating ExtraTime Radio producer David Gass in what sources said was initially intended to be a friendly competition but turned frightening for onlookers at the MLS office in New York City.

Borg – who serves as an analyst on the ExtraTime podcast and is the voice of the popular Instant Replay video series– is shown defeating Gass in the competition while bellowing guttural sounds in front of fellow co-workers.

After defeating his opponent, Borg raises the cake pop above his head in celebration while co-workers look on in terror.

Monday marked the official dawn of Major League Soccer’s new logo and some design changes to MLSsoccer.com, and sources said that the site’s employees were in high spirits due to the occasion.

Amanda Vandervort, the MLS Director of Social Media, even made “between 20-30” cake pops to honor the event and distributed them to co-workers in honor of the occasion, according to sources. The flavors were vanilla and gingerbread.

Although it’s unclear if each employee was originally expected to limit their intake to one cake pop, a source said that Borg had already eaten two cake pops by the time only one pop remained in the office. It’s unclear if Gass had eaten any cake pops.

Borg told co-workers he would only eat the vanilla-flavored cake pops, according to a source, and challenged Gass to the arm-wrestling match in order to claim the final pop. Gass accepted the challenge but ultimately lost the competition that one source dubbed “what happens when there is one cake pop left and Simon wants it.”

Borg declined to comment on the video, but fellow editor and ExtraTime Radio host Andrew Wiebe confirmed that vanilla was the better flavor of cake pop, even though he was originally given gingerbread.

“It's what I got,” Wiebe said, “but I didn't know. I would have preferred vanilla.”

It’s unknown which MLSsoccer.com staff member wrote this article or how much real work he/she could have done in the time spent writing it.
