American Exports: Alejandro Bedoya, Geoff Cameron come up empty in weekend duty

Geoff Cameron battles Arsenal

AMSTERDAM – The weekend ended winless for Americans playing in Europe as Alejandro Bedoya and Nantes were frustrated to no end in a 0-0 Ligue 1 share with visiting strugglers Metz.

Despite a large possession edge, the Canaries were only able to put one of their 11 shots on frame. After just 12 minutes, right midfielder Bedoya's bid for an assist fell flat when his cross from the flank was nodded inches over by striker Yacine Bammou.

Fifteen minutes later, Ismael Bangoura was robbed on the doorstep following a clever set-up pass from Bedoya. Mere seconds later, the American got into the act of the day by buzzing the frame with an overhead kick from a flicked-on corner.

In the 68th minute, Bedoya again went close to a potential winner, placing a low 25-year drive just wide of the left post. Now unbeaten in three, Nantes tentatively climbed into sixth place.

Across the channel in England, Geoff Cameron and Stoke City were on the wrong end of a 3-0 result at Arsenal.

The US handyman worked right back for the fourth straight game as the Gunners halted Stoke's two-game win streak in their series. Given a match-up with two-goal hero Alexis Sánchez, Cameron had a few struggles, including a second half yellow card that puts him one from suspension.

Cameron did enjoy some strong moments in the attack. He served up a pair of dangerous crosses dealt with expertly by Arsenal and also had a goal pulled back by the offside flag 13 minutes from time. With but one victory from their last five road games, Stoke held firm in 11th place.
