American Exports: Brad Guzan, Villa extend winless streak to five games | Struggles in the Championship

Aston Villa's Brad Guzan is frustrated

AMSTERDAM – Brad Guzan and punchless Aston Villa saw their Premier League win drought reach five games with a 1-0 defeat at Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

The US netminder made a pair saves, with his top stop cruelly denying Matty James shortly after intermission. Guzan also gobbled up four crosses, but it was all for naught as 12th-place Villa were shut out for the fourth straight game.

One league below in the Championship, Tim Ream and Bolton are unbeaten in seven league games at home after rallying for a 1-1 draw against Leeds United.

It was a solid if unspectacular left back outing for the former New York Red Bulls man, who logged four clearances and crossed to set up a good late opportunity for a winner. Despite extending their bulletproof run at the stadium formerly known as the Reebok, Bolton slipped a rung to 16th place.

Eric Lichaj's active outing went to waste as Nottingham Forest suffered a 2-0 home loss to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Illinois native worked left back until switching flanks with about 20 minutes to go, and passed the ball with impact in both positions. Freshly signed to a two-year contract extension, Lichaj led his side with seven tackles and added seven clearances to match as 13th-place Forest remained winless since November.

Reading's sudden home struggles continued, with Daniel Williams going the distance in a 0-0 share with guests Middlesbrough. It was a rather quiet day from the American as the Royals were left with but one win in their last five at the Madejski.

Also, Jonathan Spector went unused in his return from injury as Birmingham City rose to 12th place with a 3-1 victory over visiting Wigan, and Charlton defender Oguchi Onyewu remained a spectator as they dipped to 14th place by falling 1-0 at home to Brighton & Hove Albion.
