Columbus Crew SC "in contact" with agent of Congolese winger Cedrick Mabwati about potential move

Columbus Crew SC are in the market for another winger.

Despite adding Icelandic midfielder Kristinn Steindorsson last month to a stable of wingers that includes Ethan Finlay, Justin Meram, Hector Jimenez, Romain Gall and occasionally Ben Speas, head coach and sporting director Gregg Berhalter doesn’t seem to be finished adding pieces.

A spokesperson for representation and sports marketing firm You First Sports confirmed to MLSsoccer.com Wednesday that the club has been “in contact” with the agent for Congolese winger Cedrick Mabwati. That would seem to back up a Tuesday FutbolMLS.com report from Madrid detailing the left winger's interest in a stateside move.

The representative could not divulge details of the discussions, but acknowledged that interest exists. The 22-year-old, known as Cedrick, is currently with CA Osasuna in the Spanish second division on loan from Real Betis, the former first-division club relegated from La Liga last year, where he signed in June 2013. Before joining Betis, he spent two years with CD Numancia in the second division.

Cedrick made his first-team debut with the Democratic Republic of Congo national team on Sept. 6 and has played in six matches with the African side. He will travel with the national team this month to play in the African Cup of Nations, where DR Congo open their tournament vs. Zambia on Jan. 18.

Crew SC currently have 24 players under contract.
