Real Salt Lake add longtime MLS player, Jamaican international Tyrone Marshall as an assistant coach

Tyrone Marshall is back from the brink of retirement with the Colorado Rapids this season.

Real Salt Lake has named former Jamaican national team mainstay and MLS veteran Tyrone Marshall as an assistant coach, the team announced Tuesday.

Marshall will join the club immediately, working under head coach Jeff Cassar and will serve as RSL’s main defenders coach.

“We’re really fortunate to add somebody like Tyrone to our staff,” Cassar said in a team release. “His character is going to be excellent for our team and especially our defenders. He had a very, very good career in MLS, and he’s a young, hungry coach who wants to prove himself.  That’s the kind of staff I want to have.”

The opening in the coaching staff was created when RSL moved former assistant coach Craig Waibel to the technical director role after the departure of Garth Lagerwey to the Seattle Sounders.

“It was important that I brought somebody in that held the same standards that Craig did,” Cassar continued, “and Tyrone fits that bill completely.”

Marshall joins Real Salt Lake after 15 years in MLS as a player for five different clubs from 1998 to 2012.  During his career he won MLS Cup twice, Supporters’ Shield twice and the US Open Cup three times.

He ranks 10th on the league’s all-time list for games played, logging 337 career appearances. As a player with RSL from 1998 to 2001, he teamed with Cassar (1998-2001) and assistant coach Andy Williams (2000), along with Kyle Beckerman (2000-01) and Nick Rimando (2000-01).

In addition to his lengthy professional career, Marshall was also a fixture with the Jamaican national team from 2000 to 2010, captaining the team in stretches on his way to 83 career caps.

Since retiring following the 2012 season, Marshall has worked extensively with youth soccer development in Lexington, Ky., and served as the head coach and technical director for the Derby City Rovers of the Premier Development League in 2014.

“My family and I are very excited about the opportunity to join the RSL organization,” Marshall said.  “The direction and vision that Jeff Cassar has created within the team is something I aspired to be associated with once given the opportunity to return to MLS.”
