Transfer Watch: Guardian reports Leicester City making a run for Toronto FC star Jermain Defoe

Transfer Watch: Jermain Defoe

The speculation surrounding the future of Toronto FC Designated Player Jermain Defoe continues to run rampant.

After Toronto FC turned down a transfer offer which would have seen him return to the English Premier League in the summer, a Saturday report in The Guardian claims that EPL strugglers Leicester City are making a push for the striker.

"The Premier League's bottom club have jumped to the front of the queue for the striker's signature, ahead of Queens Park Rangers, among others, and they are confident of closing the deal," reads the article by David Hytner.

The 32-year-old Defoe scored 11 goals in 19 matches during an injury-riddled first season in MLS. He underwent groin surgery in early November after which TFC manager Greg Vanney expressed his hope of seeing Defoe return in 2015.

Speaking to reporters on December 18, Toronto FC GM Tim Bezbatchenko echoed those comments.

“Jermain, we’re planning on him getting back,” Bezbatchenko said. “If someone comes and there’s an offer, we’ll consider it. We’re planning to have him on our team but we have contingencies, and if he happens not to be here, we have a plan.”
