Liga MX Apertura 2014 finalist Tigres have confirmed that Omar Salgado has joined the club, following his four-season spell with Vancouver Whitecaps FC.
Tigres welcomed 21-year-old Salgado and fellow new signing Rafael Sobis in a Tweet on Monday night.
The Whitecaps traded Salgado to New York City FC in early December, with an agreement that the striker would then be transferred on to an international club and the fee be split between the two.
“If we left Omar unprotected in the Expansion Draft, we would have most likely lost him for nothing,” explained Whitecaps FC head coach Carl Robinson at the time.
The forward revealed last week to the Mexican press that he had been on trial at Tigres two months ago for three weeks and enjoyed the experience.
“It’s a great team with great players,” said Salgado in widely reported quotes. “We can achieve something very good next season.”
Salgado was selected first overall by Whitecaps FC in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft and made 29 regular season appearances for the club in total, only scoring once.
The El Paso, Texas, native has represented the United States at the U-17, U-18, U-20 and U-23 levels, but has Mexican citizenship and will count as a domestic player at Tigres.
Salgado has experience in Mexican soccer after his stint as a youth at all-Mexican club Chivas de Guadalajara, who he left in 2010 and swiftly began featuring for US national teams.
