American Exports: Mix Diskerud narrows shortlist to four clubs, says Rosenborg are still in running

Mix Diskerud, Rosenborg

AMSTERDAM – Contrary to a recent claim on the official Rosenborg website, free agent US midfielder Mikkel Diskerud could still re-sign with the Norwegian giants.

According to his father, the 24-year-old is still talking with the Tippeligaen runners-up, as well as three other suitors around the globe.

"The parties are something apart," Paal Diskerud informed Norwegian daily NRK. "But not anymore than that I think that possibly quite smoothly may be able to come to an agreement."

Though his contract expires on Wednesday, Diskerud has entertained interest from MLS, Mexico, Qatar and various destinations in Europe, including Germany and the Netherlands. The player has also publicly declared that he will not sign with any Norwegian club besides Rosenborg.

"Mix has recently concluded that four clubs have emerged as most appropriate for him, for different reasons," said Diskerud, who added that a final decision could come from the midfielder some time next week.

As for Rosenborg, they gave Diskerud a deadline that has passed last week. Though their offer remains on the table, the personnel staff have begun talking to "plan B" midfielders. "We have come to a point where we have to look at other opportunities," RBK technical director Erik Hoftun told NRK on Monday night.

Diskerud, who notched two goals and three assists in 22 league outings last season, was recently the subject of rumors insisting he was all but signed with a favorite foreign spot for Americans, Mexican side Tijuana. However, the USMNT playmaker quickly poured cold water on that notion by telling ESPNFC.com the only North American move he would make in 2015 would be to MLS.

Having previously held serious talks with the Portland Timbers and Columbus Crew, Diskerud has more recently been linked with interest from expansion outfit New York City FC. Norwegian reports also claimed that a Crew contingent had returned overseas to scout him wearing Rosenborg colors again this fall.
