The New York Red Bulls on Tuesday made official the hiring of former MLS player Ali Curtis as the club's new sporting director, taking over from experienced Scotsman Andy Roxburgh, who left the club earlier this month.

The news was first reported on Monday by BigAppleSoccer.com.

According to a Red Bulls statement, "Curtis will be responsible for all soccer activities at the club, including player acquisition and scouting, oversight of the coaching staff, technical staff and youth development as well as management of the soccer operations budget and salary cap."

The 36-year-old Curtis, a Hermann trophy winner at Duke and an MLS player from 2001 to 2004, joins the Red Bulls from the MLS league office, where he served as senior director of player relations and competition.

In his role with the league Curtis managed MLS club budgets, negotiated player contracts, supervised the MLS Homegrown player program and participated in ongoing Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations.

"A key component to Curtis's acquisition will be the use of data analytics and performance analysis in nearly all aspects of player personnel, team performance and week-to-week preparations," read the club's statement.
