Colorado Rapids' MLS Cup-winning head coach Gary Smith is back in the USA with Silverbacks

Four years after leading the Colorado Rapids to their only MLS Cup title in 2010, English manager Gary Smith is returning stateside.

The 46-year-old was announced on Tuesday as the new head coach of the second-division NASL Atlanta Silverbacks.

After the Rapids declined the option on his contract at the conclusion of the 2011 season, Smith joined English third-division team Stevenage FC as manager, narrowly missing out on promotion and nearly upsetting Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup.

Smith was fired by Stevenage in March 2013 and has since served as a scout for Republic of Ireland national team head coach Martin O'Neill, Smith's manager at Wycombe Wanderers in the early 90s.

After joining the Rapids as an assistant in February 2008, Smith eventually took over on an interim basis that same season before permanently earning the job in November 2008.
