USWNT: Draw not enough as US finish second to host Brazil at Brasilia International Tournament

Carli Lloyd, USWNT, and Carol Sanchez, Costa Rica

The US women's national team were held to a scoreless draw by host Brazil in the championship game of the Brasilia International Tournament on Sunday, with Brazil awarded the tournament title based on their superior record in the tournament's group stage (3-0 vs. 1-1-1).

Sunday's game was played in steady rain that left puddles throughout the field, and the teams combined for just eight total shots. The US had two late chances to win the match and the tournament title, but a Becky Sauerbrunn header in the 86th minute was tipped over the crossbar by Brazilian goalkeeper Luciana and a potential game-winning goal from Carli Lloyd in stoppage time was ruled out for offside.

In the group stage, the US tied China 1-1 (highlights), lost 3-2 to Brazil (highlights) and drubbed Argentina 7-0 (highlights) to reach the final based on a superior goal differential to China.

The US finished 2014 with a 16-3-5 record for the year. With the Women's World Cup in Canada set to kick off on June 6, 2015, the US will resume game action when they face France on Feb. 8 in Lorient and England on Feb. 13 at a venue to be announced.

The US were drawn into Group D of the World Cup and will face Australia, Sweden and Nigeria in group play.
