Retiring Red Bulls star Thierry Henry reflects on fans, soccer culture and what he learned in New York

Thierry Henry, New York Red Bulls (Nov. 29, 2014)

Thierry Henry is off to London to begin his post-playing career as a Sky Sports analyst, but before his departure, he gave one last interview to RedBull.com reflecting on his time in Major League Soccer.

Touching on topics all the way from his early, injury-related struggles with the New York Red Bulls to the changing culture both on the Red Bulls and in MLS, Henry was his honest, thoughtful self, not holding back about his tougher times with the club and displaying an intimate knowledge of the club and league he called home for four years. You can watch the full interview below, but here is a sampling of his answers:

On changing team culture in New York:

"I think that this group – as we know we fell short of winning so many times – but from last year and this year I think you can sense it in the fans. Now, they believe that this group and this team can win it. If you go back to the game that we played recently, we could have won it in New England. We didn't, but whatever – the feeling around now is that they do have belief, and for me that's something amazing..."

On changes in MLS since his arrival in 2010:

"It has changed a lot. The game has changed. The league has changed. Now teams have their own stadiums. You see the fans wearing the jerseys of their teams. Before when I first arrived you could see some guys going to the game watching the Chicago Fire against us, and you see the guy with a Madrid shirt or a Barca shirt. And you're like, 'OK, cool, you like soccer, but can you wear the jersey of your team?' But more and more now you see in the stadiums that the guys are actually wearing the jersey of their team. And proudly."
