American Exports: Freddy Adu clarifies departure from FK Jagodina, says he was on six-month contract

Freddy Adu talks to Blackpool's Tangerine TV

Freddy Adu is once again on the hunt for a new club after his departure from Serbia's FK Jagodina, but wants to make it clear: he did not depart any earlier than planned.

The club announced Sunday that it had released Adu, but the 24-year-old took to Twitter Monday to clarify the circumstances of his split.

Adu signed for the Jagodina on July 24, and made only one substitute appearance, in a cup match on Sept. 24.

The Serbian club was the latest stop on Adu peripatetic career.

He became  the youngest player in any American professional sport when he landed with D.C. United at age 14, in 2004. After four years at RFK Stadium, where he won an MLS Cup, he moved to Real Salt Lake for one year before leaving for Portuguese power Benfica in 2007 following a strong showing at the U-20 World Cup. In Portugal, he failed to break into the first team, totaling 11 league appearances over four years while going on loan four times.

Adu briefly returned to MLS with the Philadelphia Union in 2011, but departed for Brazil's Bahia in April 2013, where he lasted until November, again with sparse playing time.

Prior to his arrival in Serbia, Adu trained with Blackpool in England and AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. In Oct. 2014, he was reportedly shopped around to clubs in the Swedish top flight, but no indications have emerged yet with regards to his next destination.
