American Exports: Herculez Gomez comes full circle, returns to Liga MX club Puebla

Herculez Gomez celebrates a Tigres goal

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – US national team striker Herculez Gomez’s journey through Mexican soccer appears to have come full circle, with Puebla announcing on Wednesday that he will be returning to his first Liga MX club for next season.

Gomez’s six-month loan deal at Tigres ended after the Monterrey club lost the Apertura 2014 final to Club América last Sunday.

There has been no official information about whether the deal from his parent club, Tijuana, is permanent or another loan.

The 32-year-old Gomez joined Puebla from Major League Soccer in 2010 and netted 10 goals in his first season to finish joint top scorer alongside Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez. Gomez's form earned the Las Vegas native a place in Bob Bradley’s USMNT squad for the 2010 World Cup.

Since then, Gomez has featured for Pachuca, Estudiantes Tecos, Santos Laguna – where he won the Liga MX title – and Club Tijuana.

Puebla are in the midst of a relegation battle at present and sith 16th in the relegation table, with just Leones Negros and Veracruz below it.

Along with Gomez, the club signed seven other players in Liga MX’s transfer “draft” on Wednesday, the majority with ample experience in Mexico’s first division.

There were no other deals involving American players in the Liga MX domestic transfer deadline day, although players can still be sold abroad or move from other countries to Mexico through the end of the January transfer window.
