Sporting Kansas City sign forward Dom Dwyer to contract extension

Dom Dwyer isn't going anywhere after his breakout season.

Sporting Kansas City announced Wednesday that they had signed the 24-year-old forward to a contract extension with the club. Per club policy, the terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"I am ecstatic to commit my future to Kansas City," Dwyer said in a statement. "I want to thank the coaches and ownership for having faith in me. Also, a special thanks to the fans for all of their continued support. I am excited to get going again. Last year was a starting point for what is to come in the future, which is scoring a lot more goals, driving to win championships and enjoying myself on and off the field in a city with supporters which I have grown to love and embrace."

The Englishman enjoyed a breakout season for Sporting, scoring 22 goals in MLS play to set a single-season club record. He also added a goal apiece in the CONCACAF Champions League and in KC's lone MLS Cup Playoff game.

"Dom's new contract is well-deserved. I am very happy for him and for the club to have reached this deal," Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "He has performed at a very high level on a consistent basis and this contract again shows a strong commitment to keeping players of his caliber in Kansas City."

Dwyer, who spent time with the Norwich City youth teams in his home country before coming to the US for college, was drafted No. 16 overall out of the University of South Florida in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. He spent much of the 2013 season on loan with Orlando City in USL Pro, where he scored 15 goals in 13 games to earn All-League honors before scoring four more in the playoffs to win recognition as the championship game MVP in Orlando's win.

After his spell with Orlando, he returned to bag a pair of goals and assists for Sporting in MLS, then scored the game-winning goal in the Eastern Conference Championship second leg en route to the team's MLS Cup win. Following his 2014 campaign, Dwyer has now scored 50 goals across all competitions since the beginning of 2013.
