San Jose Earthquakes re-sign forward Steven Lenhart to new contract

Steven Lenhart chases a ball for the San Jose Earthquakes

San Jose’s lone remaining bash brother is set to remain an Earthquake, with the club announcing on Wednesday that it has re-signed striker Steven Lenhart to a new contract.

Per league and club policy, terms of Lenhart’s new deal were not disclosed.

The move is the latest in new head coach Dominic Kinnear’s first offseason in charge of the Quakes. Last week, the former Houston manager traded for ex-Dynamo forward Mark Sherrod, acquired goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum in Stage One of the Re-Entry Draft and declined options on four players from San Jose’s 2014 roster.

"We are happy to sign Steven to a new contract," Kinnear said in a statement. "When Steven is playing and being productive, we all know the team benefits from that. We're looking forward to a productive season from him in 2015."

The 28-year-old Lenhart has spent the past four years in San Jose, scoring 20 goals and registering eight assists during his time with the Earthquakes. His best season was in 2012, when he scored 10 goals and teamed with former San Jose forward Alan Gordon to form a rough-and-tumble duo that helped the Quakes win the Supporters’ Shield.

Lenhart has 33 goals and 12 assists in 135 regular season games in his seven-year MLS career. He had a rough 2014, tallying just one goal and one assist after being limited to just 11 games due to injury.
