Tim Howard walks back claim that Brad Friedel attempted to block move to Manchester United

Tim Howard is walking back claims made in his newly released book that fellow English Premier League and USMNT goalkeeper Brad Friedel attempted to block his 2003 move from the MetroStars to Manchester United.

The Everton ‘keeper released a statement Tuesday on Twitter saying he has directed his publisher to amend future copies of “The Keeper.”

After excerpts of the book were released on ESPN FC earlier this month, Friedel took issue with the claims that he refused to vouch for Howard through the Professional Footballers’ Association as he attempted to gain a UK work permit ahead of his move to Old Trafford. Friedel then wrote to the PFA, requesting they confirm he never sent correspondence regarding Howard.

“It’s complete garbage,” Friedel told ESPN FC. "To be honest with you, all we're looking for is an apology. We can't get the book reprinted. I'm not looking for monetary gain. I just want an apology."

Howard’s statement explains that he was attempting to describe the “number of obstacles” that stood in the way of his move to the Premier League.

“At the time, I was surprised that Brad would not automatically sign my letter of recommendation, and I took this as an opposition to my application,” Howard said in his statement. “Brad later explained that he had not in fact opposed my efforts to seek a work permit, either by writing to the PFA or otherwise. I have decided to take Brad at his word.”
