American Exports: Terrence Boyd suffers torn ACL in match with RB Leipzig

Terrence Boyd with Red Bull Leipzig

United States national team hopeful Terrence Boyd suffered a torn ACL in his right knee during a club game in Germany on Sunday, putting his immediate future with the USMNT in doubt as Jurgen Klinsmann looks forward to 2015.

German club RB Leipzig confirmed the injury to the 23-year-old Boyd, who also suffered a partially torn ACL in the same knee in July. Red Bull was playing against fellow 2.Bundesliga side Ingoltstadt on Sunday when Boyd suffered the injury, and was subbed out in the 37th minute of the match in Leipzig.

Boyd has appeared in 13 matches for the US national team since making his debut for Klinsmann in 2012. A powerful, 6-foot-2 forward born in Bremen and a veteran of both the German second division and the Austrian first division, Boyd was one of the final cuts for the US team’s 23-man roster for the World Cup in Brazil.
