AMSTERDAM – Aston Villa netminder Brad Guzan recovered from an early mistake to win at home for first time since August with a 2-1 decision over Leicester City on Sunday
The US star served up a poor rebound that Foxes forward Leonardo Ulloa bagged for the 13th minute opener, but rallied to finish with three saves and three crosses hauled in. Guzan's finest stop of the day came when he tipped over a David Nugent drive moments before Alan Hutton claimed Villa's winner with 19 minutes to play.
Guzan & Co. posted consecutive EPL wins for the first time in nearly three months and extended their unbeaten run to five games to reach 11th place.
Over in the Bundesliga, Timothy Chandler ably went the distance as streaking Eintracht Frankfurt steamrolled visiting Werder Bremen 5-2.
The right back nearly notched an assist when his cross was nodded just wide in the 33rd minute, and his surge up the field midway through the second frame keyed the rush that resulted in Eintracht's third goal of the match. Chandler also drew a late yellow card as the hosts the hosts rose two places to seventh thanks to their first three-game win streak since Sept. 2012.
One level down, Alfredo Morales and Ingolstadt moved clear at the top with a 1-0 triumph at RB Leipzig, who lost Terrence Boyd in the first half to a serious knee injury.
Shortly after picking up a caution close to the half-hour mark, Boyd went down without contact near midfield in the 37th minute. The club would later reveal that an MRI scan showed the US forward will require surgery and several months recovery for tears in his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, that ACL being the same one he partially in July.
Morales, meanwhile, was robbed of an insurance tally from the doorstep in the 65th minute and would eventually see a yellow card of his own. Ingolstadt boosted their cushion at the top to five points with the result, which also dropped the Red Bulls to eighth place.
Across the border in the Eredivisie, the home struggles of Rubio Rubin and FC Utrecht continued in a 4-2 loss to Heracles.
The teen playmaker was again effective at moving his team forward into attack, but was unable to put any of his three shots on target. Tenth-place Utrecht would miss a first half penalty and concede three times after the break to fall to a fourth defeat in their last five games at the Galgenwaard.
