American Exports: Jozy Altidore eyes first start of EPL season as Sunderland travel to Liverpool

Jozy Altidore, Sunderland

AMSTERDAM – Several Americans overseas will lace up for headline action this weekend, with Tim Howard and Everton seeking revenge for last season's sweep at the feet of Manchester City.

All times listed in ET.

ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE

Jozy Altidore
 – Sunderland at Liverpool (495370302" tabindex="0">Saturday, 10 am on NBCSN)

The US striker could be in for his first start of the EPL season, with Steven Fletcher departing their midweek contest due to a sore back. Altidore has only tasted defeat in three appearances against Liverpool, who have not lost at home to the Black Cats since 1983. At least this time, Sunderland gets to face a slumping Reds strike force that will run without Mario Balotelli and Daniel Sturridge.

Geoff Cameron – Stoke City vs. Arsenal (Saturday, 10 am on Premier League Extra Time)

The US handyman has enjoyed three noteworthy games against in four tries against Arsenal. Last season, Cameron scored his first EPL goal in the away loss and helped Stoke shut the Gunners out for the second time as they earned the spilt at home. The Potters have dropped just one of the last 10 meetings with the Gunners at the Brittania. Both sides have a long injury list, with the visitors set to arrive sans the esteemed midfield trio of Mikel Arteta, Mesut Özil and Jack Wilshere.

Tim Howard – Everton at Manchester City (Saturday, 12:30 pm on NBC)

The Toffees netminder will try to regain control of a series he once dominated when they travel to Etihad Stadium on Saturday. Though still 10-6-2 in his career duels with City, Howard has won just one of the last five clashes against the defending champions. He will certainly want his teammates to throw a leash on Sergio Agüero, who scored on the American three times last season.

GERMAN BUNDESLIGA

Fabian Johnson – Borussia Moenchengladbach vs. John Anthony Brooks – Hertha Berlin (495370305" tabindex="0">Saturday, 9:30 am onMyGermanTV+)

With an injury crisis at the back for the capital city guests, Brooks will definitely start. The Foals are hoping Johnson comes back from a muscle strain, and if so, he'll be aiming to avoid going winless in five career appearances against Hertha. With fast starters 'Gladbach suddenly on a three-game losing slide, there could be some lineup changes, even if they are 3-1-1 in their last five home matches in this series.

FRENCH LIGUE 1

Alejandro Bedoya
 – Nantes at Paris Saint-Germain (495370306" tabindex="0">Saturday, 11 am on TV5 Monde, beIN Sport Connect)

It is not a wise thing to carry a two-game losing streak into Parc des Princes, but Bedoya & Co. will do just that 495370307" tabindex="0">on Saturday evening. The US attacker, who is 0-2-0 in games against the French champs, could make his first start in six games. Nantes have lost six straight in Paris, the last five by shutout. Against all odds and trends, the Canaries need a result to stay in touch with the European places.

DUTCH EREDIVISIE

Aron Jóhannsson – AZ Alkmaar vs. Go Ahead Eagles (495370308" tabindex="0">Saturday, 12:30 pm)

The Cheese Farmers could pull into third place with a victory, and the expected return of top set-up man Steven Berghuis should aid the cause. That factor should make Jóhannsson, an AFAS-Stadion terror that scored in his only previous appearance against Go Ahead, more difficult to handle. It may be a night for the US forward to bust out, as AZ have taken the two prior series meetings at home by a combined 10-1 score.
