Seattle Sounders, LA Galaxy set for coldest game in Seattle's MLS history

CenturyLink Field

The second leg of the Western Conference Championship between the Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy on Sunday night (9:20 pm ET; ESPN) is expected to be one of the biggest games of the season in Major League Soccer, and now it’s going into the history books as the coldest MLS game in Seattle’s history.

With a temperature of 31 degrees for kick off at CenturyLink Field, the game breaks the previous mark of 39 degrees for a regular season game between the Sounders and Real Salt Lake on March 28, 2009.

A unseasonable cold spell blowing through Seattle this weekend forced the Galaxy to wait for a gounds crew to clear off a snow-dusted surface at CenturyLink Field on Saturday, and the frosty field conditions at the stadium have carried over into the hours leading up to Sunday’s match.

While the game’s conditions will make for a memorable evening in Seattle, it’s far from the coldest game played in league history. Sporting Kansas City and Real Salt Lake set that record last year when they played in the MLS Cup final with the temperature at 20 degrees for kickoff at Sporting Park.
