American Exports: Jose Torres features in vital Liga MX playoff draw for Tigres

Jose Torres celebrates a goal for Tigres

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Tigres’ Jose Torres returned to his first club Pachuca on Wednesday, with his current team Tigres taking a valuable 1-1 tie from the away leg of the Apertura 2014 quarterfinals.

Torres played the full 90 minutes in central midfield, once again putting in a good performance alongside Uruguayan international Egidio Arévalo. In the 29th minute, he turned sharply and sent a left foot shot just over the bar from the edge of the penalty area.

Tigres took the lead in the 49th minute through an own goal from Pachuca’s Rodrigo Salinas, with Los Tuzos leveling in the 92nd after Hugo Ayala unwittingly turned the ball into his own net.

Herculez Gomez also started the match for Tigres, featuring upfront, but came off at halftime after a quiet display.

The return leg is on Saturday in Estadio Universitario (8 p.m. ET, Univision Deportes).

In Mexico’s Under-20 playoffs, Alejandro Guido, Stevie Rodriguez, Fernando Arce Jr., Raul Rodriguez, John Requejo and Paul Arriola all started for Club Tijuana in the quarterfinal first leg against Atlas, which Xolos won 2-0. Forward Amando Moreno also came off the bench on the hour mark, with the score then at 0-0.

On Thursday, Edgar Castillo’s Atlas plays away at Monterrey (8 p.m. ET, Univision Deportes).
