American Exports: Club America's Ventura Alvarado open to USMNT call-up, contrary to report from Mexico

Ventura Alvarado of Club America

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Contrary to a report out of Mexico last week, Club América defender Ventura Alvarado has not discounted call-ups to US national teams.

“He’s rejected calls to United States youth national teams because one day his desire is to reach the Tricolor [Mexico]” read a story in TelevisaDeportes.com, published on Nov. 21.

A source close to the player and with full knowledge of the situation told MLSsoccer.com on Monday that 22-year-old Alvarado had not received a call-up from US Soccer and that the Phoenix, Ariz., native would be open to it, although he is too old for the 2016 Olympic squad.

Alvarado started his first Liga MX match at right back for Club América on Saturday in their 2-1 home defeat to Atlas and has worked his was up the team’s youth system.

Fast, physically strong and able to play in multiple positions in defense, Alvarado has featured mainly this season for América’s U-20 team but has also completed the 90 minutes in two of the club’s CONCACAF Champions League group matches.

Alvarado’s family resides in the United States and he told MLSsoccer.com in July 2013 that he was keen to play for the Stars and Stripes.
