AMSTERDAM – Brad Guzan and Aston Villa were cruelly denied a drought-snapping victory on Monday night after conceding a 1-1 equalizer to guests Southampton with nine minutes to play.
The US netminder logged three saves, with his best work coming when he pushed a Sadio Mané curler around the frame in the eight minutes before intermission. In addition, Guzan captured five crosses and shrewdly kicked away a low area feed before any of the lurking Saints could could put a boot to it in the 72nd minute.
However, Southampton would finally draw level when Nathaniel Clyne finished off a fine team move from near the penalty spot, keeping Villa winless in eight. The result did nudge the hosts to two points above the trap door.
