American Exports: Brad Guzan stands tall, but Aston Villa winless skid hits eight

Aston Villa's Brad Guzan is frustrated

AMSTERDAM – Brad Guzan and Aston Villa were cruelly denied a drought-snapping victory on Monday night after conceding a 1-1 equalizer to guests Southampton with nine minutes to play.

The US netminder logged three saves, with his best work coming when he pushed a Sadio Mané curler around the frame in the eight minutes before intermission. In addition, Guzan captured five crosses and shrewdly kicked away a low area feed before any of the lurking Saints could could put a boot to it in the 72nd minute.

However, Southampton would finally draw level when Nathaniel Clyne finished off a fine team move from near the penalty spot, keeping Villa winless in eight. The result did nudge the hosts to two points above the trap door.

Over in Germany's second flight, Jann George went unused as Greuther Fürth rallied late in a see-saw 3-3 share away to title chasers FortunaDüsseldorf.
