The Canadian Under-20 national team closed out an undefeated run in the Marbella Tournament in Spain, handing the USA their only loss of the competition on Tuesday as both sides continue preparations for CONCACAF World Cup qualifying in January.
The game-winner came early in the fifth minute as Toronto FC midfielder Manny Aparicio found Dylan Carreiro and the Dundee player put Canada up 1-0 for good. They were able to hold on to the win despite a 42nd minute attempt from US forward Dembakwi Yomba that went off the crossbar.
US coach Tab Ramos made a total of four changes from the USA's win over Ireland on Saturday, including the return of Columbus Crew SC midfielder Romain Gall to the starting lineup.
On the other side Canada coach Rob Gale also made four changes from their last game, a 2-1 win over Russia. Montreal Impact midfielder Jeremy Gagnon-Lapare got the start after not seeing any action against the Russians.
A total of 14 players that featured in the game are currently on MLS rosters or in MLS youth academies with six on the US side -- Santiago Castano (New York Red Bulls), Tyler Turner (Orlando City), Matt Miazga (New York Red Bulls), Kellyn Acosta (FC Dallas), Tommy Thompson (San Jose Earthquakes) and Gall.
The Canadians had eight players with MLS ties: Samuel Adekugbe (Vancouver Whitecaps), Jordan Haynes (Vancouver Whitecaps), Jordan Hamilton (Toronto FC), Louis Beland-Goyette (Montreal Impact), Marco Bustos (Vancouver Whitecaps), Kianz Froese (Vancouver Whitecaps) Aparicio and Gagnon-Lapare.
Both teams will feature in January's CONCACAF Under-20 Championships.
