American Exports: Yanks in Mexico suffer first-leg losses in Ascenso MX playoffs

Marco Vidal in action for Mineros de Zacatecas

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The postseason is well underway in Mexico's second division, but it has been an unhappy start for the Americans involved.

Goalkeeper Austin Guerrero did his best, but couldn’t stop his Altamira side falling 2-1 at home against Coras de Tepic in the first leg of the 2014 Ascenso MX Apertura semifinals on Sunday.

Guerrero kept his team in the contest with three good saves in the first half and Altamira took the lead through Paraguayan forward Victor Aquino two minutes after halftime, but Coras – who were the more enterprising of the two sides – stormed back to take the victory.

On the road for the return leg, Altamira now face an uphill struggle to make the final, but will get their chance at a storybook win on Nov. 22.

On Saturday in the other semifinal, Texan midfielder Marco Vidal (above, right) went 90 minutes for Mineros de Zacatecas, who lost 1-0 on the road to Necaxa.

The return match in that series will be in Zacatecas on Friday.

The winner of the Ascenso MX Apertura 2014 will face the winner of the Clausura 2015 for a place in the 2015-16 Liga MX.
