American Exports: Edgar Castillo, Atlas qualify for Liga MX playoffs

Edgar Castillo

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Edgar Castillo’s Atlas lost 4-0 away to León on Saturday, but qualified for the playoffs regardless.

Castillo went the full 90 minutes for Los Rojinegros and made a key tackle in the 50th minute, but was at fault for La Fiera’s last goal when he gave the ball away cheaply when playing out from the back.

Tigres also secured a playoff place on Saturday thanks to a 1-0 win in Estadio Universitario over Querétaro.

Herculez Gomez started despite missing the Copa MX semifinal midweek due to a muscle complaint and had a couple of half chances before being taken off at halftime.

Texan Jose Torres was back in midfield and was substituted out in the 90th minute with what looked like an injury, but he assured reporters in Monterrey afterwards that it is nothing serious and he will be available next weekend.

Also Saturday, Michael Orozco played as one of Puebla’s three center backs in the 1-1 home tie against Pachuca and is now out of the playoff race.

In the first leg of the playoff quarterfinals in Mexico’s second division, Marco Vidal played the full match for Mineros de Zacatecas in their 2-1 road victory over Lobos BUAP, for whom Daniel Cuevas wasn’t in the 18.

Sonny Guadarrama went 78 minutes for Atlante, who defeated Necaxa 2-1.
