American Exports: Terrence Boyd talks ACL injury, Americans in Bundesliga and more in interview

Terrence Boyd with Red Bull Leipzig

Terrence Boyd certainly had a tumultuous summer. After being disappointed by his omission from the USMNT World Cup roster, the big forward suffered a partially torn ACL in July that kept him from early season action with new team Red Bull Leipzig.

Now that he’s back in action and seeing success with the 2.Bundesliga side, Boyd chatted about that and more with international sports publication Vavel.com.

Among the highlights from the lengthy interview were his thoughts on the US national team.

“Of course I was disappointed,” Boyd said of not making the roster for Brazil. “But I accepted it. [Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann] had a very, very difficult decision to make on who went to the World Cup. He had to have his own feeling on what the best team would be to get as far as possible. I think we had a great World Cup. I was in a good run of form, I was feeling great and I guess he just didn’t want another big striker in the squad. That’s the way it is.”

He said he was proud to see the success enjoyed with the Yanks by fellow American Bundesliga players.

“It’s good when you have people like Timothy Chandler, John Brooks, Fabian Johnson and Julian Green in the Bundesliga because this is the level we want to maintain in the national team,” he said.

Boyd, who joined Red Bull after a successful run with Rapid Vienna, also spoke about the momentum lost from his preseason injury. He scored his first goal for his new club Wednesday in a 3-1 German Cup victory over Erzgebirge Aue.

“I was raring to go from the first minute I was here, and then the injury came,” he said. “After I found out it was 10 weeks, it was hard because you just want to show everybody what you can do. Now I’m back and I’m happy that the coach has given me my chance.”
