AMSTERDAM – Bremen-born US national team forward Terrence Boyd (pictured above) officially opened his German account on Wednesday night by notching the late insurance tally for RB Leipzig in a 3-1 overtime triumph against DfB-Pokal second round visitors Erzgebirge Aue.

The No. 18 shirt joined the contest with his side down one just past the hour mark. Boyd made himself an Aue nuisance almost immediately, with his excellent knock-down header unfortunately finding no Red Bull takers a few moments after he'd entered play.

The hosts were desperate to level the contest in the waning moments, with Boyd's header off the crossbar putting thousands of heads in hands in the third minute of added time. Scant moments later, Yussuf Poulson equalized to send the game to a pair of 15-minute extra sessions.

After the hosts moved in front during the first overtime frame, Boyd notched his first competitive goal for the Red Bulls with a close-range header.

Elsewhere, Fabian Johnson made a late cameo as Borussia Mönchengladbach advanced to the last 16 with a 2-1 victory at Eintracht Frankfurt. Timothy Chandler dressed but did not feature for the beaten home side.

Julian Green also went unused as hosts Hamburg fell 2-1 to his parent club, Bayern Munich.

The round-of-16 draw was concluded after all matches ended, with Boyd's RB Leipzig lined up to get a visit from Wolfsburg and Johnson's 'Gladbach set for a trip to face Regionalliga Südwest underdog Kickers Offenbach.

Over in England's Capital One Cup, Geoff Cameron worked 73 lukewarm minutes as Stoke City rallied from two down for naught as guests Southampton scored near time to pull out the 3-2 victory.

Also, Brad Friedel served as Tottenham back-up in a 2-0 home win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Spurs move on to host Newcastle in the quarterfinals the week of December 15, while Zak Whitbread and Derby County were drawn to welcome Chelsea to Pride Park.
