FIFA unveils Russia 2018 World Cup logo -- from space | THE SIDELINE

2018 World Cup Russia logo

FIFA president Sepp Blatter revealed the 2018 World Cup logo Tuesday on a Russian state TV talk show – and, of course, there were cosmonauts involved.

Oh, and they were in space, unveiling the logo over a video feed.

Blatter, of course, did famously say he hopes the World Cup is one day an interplanetary competition. Perhaps this is the first step.

But not surprisingly, the host country of earth’s biggest soccer tournament pulled out plenty of pomp and circumstance for the event, involving not only the country’s proud space program but also beaming the logo simultaneously onto Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre as part of a light show.

The logo itself depicts the World Cup trophy in the red and blue colors of the Russian flag, along with gold trim.

“Seeing the football World Cup in our country was a dream for all of us,” cosmonaut Elena Serova said.

Blatter said the logo represents Russia’s “heart and spirit.”
