Red Bulls' Bradley Wright-Phillips strikes twice to tie MLS single-season goal record

It's not a new record, but it's as close as possible.

New York Red Bulls' forward Bradley Wright-Phillips kept fans across MLS on their seats after scoring twice in the New York Red Bulls 2-0 win at Sporting Kansas City on Sunday night, taking his season total to 27 and tying the MLS single-season record for goals scored.

He finishes the season level with the San Jose Earthquakes' Chris Wondolowski and Tampa Bay Munity's Roy Lassiter, who struck 27 goals in 2012 and 1996, respectively.

Wright-Phillips' tally also means he wins the 2014 Budweiser Golden Boot for MLS.

Wright-Phillips joined the Red Bulls midway through the 2013 season after several years in England, including stints with Manchester City and Southampton. He scored twice in nine appearances (including playoffs) upon his arrival, but then exploded in 2014, including striking six game-winning goals and posting three hat tricks.
