Montreal Impact's Marco Di Vaio to be available for Toronto FC game despite midweek Italy trip

MONTREAL – Marco Di Vaio is in for a busy four days.

A Montreal Impact spokesperson confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that Di Vaio will travel all the way to Italy in the coming hours, as Corriere di Bologna reported on Tuesday. Di Vaio will fly out this Wednesday afternoon and back to Montreal on Friday.

Di Vaio’s former club, Bologna F.C., is now under the part-ownership of Montreal Impact president Joey Saputo. A press conference with the new investors in the Italian club, led by New York-based lawyer Joe Tacopina, is scheduled for Thursday.

It will be a quick turnaround for Di Vaio. The Impact have a chance, this Saturday afternoon, to knock archrivals Toronto FC out of playoff contention on their home field (2 pm ET; Univision Deportes). Asked about Di Vaio’s potential absence on Tuesday – when it was still unconfirmed – Montreal head coach Frank Klopas was adamant that his star forward would be at BMO Field this weekend.

“I’m sure that I’ll talk to our people inside, but no matter what happens, I know he'll be with us in Toronto and available to help the team,” Klopas told reporters.

Ever since Di Vaio left Bologna for the Impact in the summer of 2012, he has been linked with a return there in a technical or ambassadorial role, after his retirement. Various reports in Italy suggest that this role will be revealed on Thursday.

Di Vaio announced his retirement plans earlier this month.
