LA Galaxy star Robbie Keane registers record-breaking hat trick vs. Gibraltar in EURO qualifying

Robbie Keane, Republic of Ireland (Oct. 11, 2014)

It's been a season to remember for Robbie Keane. For club and country.

The LA Galaxy forward, who's considered a top contender for the MLS MVP award, had a record-breaking performance for the Republic of Ireland in EURO 2016 Group D qualifying vs. Gibraltar.

Keane registered a hat trick inside the opening 20 minutes of the match as the Irish thumped their rivals 7-0 on Saturday to momentarily move into first place of their group.

The three goals not only represented the fastest hat trick in EURO tournament history (qualifying and finals), but it also gave Keane the all-time record for most goals in EURO qualifying with 21.

Keane's first two goals came in the run of play in the 6th and 14th minutes and he clinched the hat trick on a 17th-minute penalty kick (watch video above). Keane now has 65 international goals, tops among all players to ever play for the Republic of Ireland.

Dutch legend Marco Van Basten held the previous record for fastest hat trick in EURO history with three goals in 23 minutes against Malta in 1990.
