MLS Fantasy Advice: Three players at each position who are worth acquiring down the stretch

A few days ago Andrew Wiebe threw Jason Saghini out of the studio (see video above) and challenged you to build a 13-man, $100 million team that would be with you for the rest of the season.

I'm not so sure Saghini understood where Wiebe was going with this idea and I'm not particularly sure either. But I'll to play along anyways.

I'm not going to give you a 13-player team and I'm not going to restrict myself to a $100 million budget, but I will give your three players at each position you should own going forward who will 1) not be leaving for international duty and 2) are cost effective or owned by a smaller percentage of fantasy managers.

Goalkeepers

  1. Joe Bendik - I'm not big on any DGW goalkeeper this week, but he's inexpensive with a better defense and more favorable schedule than Jon Busch or Tyler Deric.
  2. Bill Hamid - Technically leaving for international duty, but scheduled to return without missing any games. If so, he's my No.1 GK option to finish out the season.
  3. Bobby Shuttleworth - Playing for a top team that's in form at the moment. Schedule going forward looks good.

Defenders

  1. Steve Birnbaum - Inexpensive rookie on the No. 1 team in the east. No other team in the league has a more favorable schedule to finish the season.
  2. Nick Hagglund - Getting forward and scoring goals. Still reasonably priced plus he's got a huge DGW in Round 31.
  3. Chris Tierney - In form and playing on a top caliber team. Great set-piece taker which is rare for defenders. Quality matchups coming up.

Midfielders

  1. Giles Barnes - Houston have lost a couple key starters but Barnes still has Brad Davis feeding him the rock. Good value per price.
  2. Michael Bradley - The general needs to play well if Toronto are going to make the playoffs. He takes set-pieces, corners and he's a recovery machine.
  3. Lamar Neagle - Deadly from distance and getting lots of chances with Dempsey and Martins playing well.

Forward

  1. Fabian Espindola - Played 90 minutes (last week) for the first time in a month and looked great. Goals are coming.
  2. Obafemi Martins - Must-have player if you don't own him already. What are you waiting for?
  3. Jermain Defoe - Huge risk vs reward type of player, but someone worth taking a flyer on if you like to gamble.
