AMSTERDAM – After Jozy Altidore's US national team camp declaration that he could look to leave Sunderland if his minutes don't increase, one might wonder what sort of European interest the striker might draw.
As it so happens, the Black Cats waved off summer interest in the USMNT ace from a healthy handful of European clubs. Sources on both sides of the Atlantic have confirmed to MLSsoccer.com that French side Lille were the most enthusiastic transfer-chasers turned away, while Eredivisie power PSV Eindhoven made a loan enquiry that was knocked back quickly.
The sources indicated that Altidore also received attention from a few mystery MLS teams, but unlike returning USMNT stars Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey, the 24-year-old is not ready to come back home at this juncture in his career.
Last season, despite scoring just one Premier League goal, Altidore easily led all Sunderland strikes with 2,401 league minutes played. This term, the former New Yorks Red Bulls forward has received just 57 minutes of EPL pitch time and 237 overall, with one goal and one assist out of his Capital One appearances.
