American Exports: Edgar Castillo, Atlas top Chivas in derby to move to 2nd place in Liga MX

Edgar Castillo and his Atlas teammates celebrate a goal against Chivas

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Edgar Castillo’s Atlas defeated city rivals Chivas 1-0 on Sunday in the Estadio Omnilife to take the Clásico Tapatío and lift the Guadalajara side to second place in the Liga MX.

Castillo once again completed 90 minutes and won the corner that led to the only goal, when he flicked the ball over Chivas right winger Carlos Fierro down the left wing and sent in a low cross that was turned behind in the 24th minute.

The US international created two good opportunities to grab a goal of his own in the second half. The first came when he ran directly towards goal from midfield and struck a weak shot from the edge of the area in the 65th. Eight minutes from time, Castillo twisted and turned inside the area and looked to have created a clear shot at goal, but his effort was smothered.

Nevertheless, his running in the final third caused Chivas consistent problems and Castillo was solid up against Fierro when defending.

Earlier Sunday, Michael Orozco also went 90 minutes for Puebla in their 1-1 tie on the road to Toluca.

Orozco was returning from suspension and played at center back, with the point leaving relegation strugglers Puebla in 14th position in the league after 12 rounds of the Apertura 2014 championship.
