American Exports: Edgar Castillo scores first goal for Atlas; Herculez Gomez earns first start for Tigres

Edgar Castillo

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Edgar Castillo netted the first goal of his Atlas career, but it didn’t make a difference in the end as Los Rojinegros lost 2-1 to Monterrey on Saturday.

The game was fought out between two of the best sides so far in the Liga MX Apertura 2014, but Atlas gave up two sloppy first half goals.

Castillo struck from the edge of the penalty area in the 8th minute, with a left foot shot that took a slight deflection on its way in, but his side couldn’t get an equalizer, despite dominating the second half.

Alonso Hernandez played the final 33 minutes for Monterrey after coming on for Cesar Delgado on the wing in the 58th.

The results leaves Atlas still in third place, but now five points off leader Club America, with Monterrey four points off Las Aguilas with a game in hand.

Herculez Gomez earned his first Liga MX start for Tigres and put the ball in the net with a header in the 40th, although it was disallowed for offside.

Gomez came off at halftime in the 3-2 win in Estadio Hidalgo, with Jose Torres continuing his good form by going 90 minutes in midfield.

In the Ascenso MX, Stevie Rodriguez went 65 minutes for Dorados de Sinaloa in their 1-0 win over Estaudiantes de Altamira, for which Austin Guerrero was the goalkeeper.
