MLS Fantasy Advice: Tips and player picks to help you finish out the year strong

Jon Busch - Fantasy

Transfer Deadline: Friday, 10 pm ET

With six rounds to go in the 2014 MLS Fantasy season and only three rounds left until the playoffs begin in your head-to-head leagues, who you bring in these next few weeks will decide whether you finish out the season on the way up or the way down.

Many of you will choose to play it safe while a select few will take some gambles. I hope to do a little bit of both.

Only six teams will benefit from the highly coveted double-game-week over the final five rounds.

  • Round 28 - N/A
  • Round 29 - Seattle (at DAL, vs CHV)
  • Round 30 - Chicago (at PHI, vs MTL)
  • Round 31 - Houston (at TOR, vs DC), San Jose (at POR, at RSL), Toronto (vs HOU, at NY)
  • Round 32 - N/A
  • Round 33 - Chivas (at RSL, vs SJ)

Focus on the two main transaction pages HERE and HERE. Monitor the trends, but don't use it as your only source. Use that gut of yours too.

The top selected players will always be popular choices, but here are some lesser-used players with (and without) DGW's remaining my gut is telling me to keep a close eye on as the season winds down.

1Giles Barnes (owned by 5.8 percent) - Plays the full 90 minutes nearly every game. Scored a goal vs Toronto in their last meeting. And he's got three goals and 19 total points in his last two matches. The main problem for managers with a heavy bankroll will be finding room him in a midfield loaded with top players.

2Ignacio Piatti (owned by 1.0 percent) - Four goals, one assist in his last three games played. Missed last week's game vs New England due to rest, but should be good to go barring injury in Wednesday night's midweek CCL game vs New York.

3Alvas Powell (owned by 0.9 percent) - The most 'in form' player on the Portland Timbers not named Diego Valeri. Not the best defensive team in the league, but he's getting in the box and scoring goals, something very rare for an outside back in MLS.

4Brad Davis (owned by 1.4 percent) - Pricey, but when healthy and playing well he's one of the most dangerous midfielders in the league. Could potentially have a massive showing in Round 31 if you give him the captain's armband.

5Sanna Nyassi (owned by 1.7 percent) - Not a sexy pick, but he's been producing. Sometimes a team needs a spark to get them out of a funk and Nyassi has been that guy in Chicago as of late. His speedy, aggressive style has been causing trouble for opposing defenders so he might be worth taking a flier on in Round 30.

6Jon Busch (owned by 5.7 percent) - Tied for the league lead in total points (135) among goalkeepers and first in saves (110). In his last three matches Busch has 16 points without recording a clean sheet. Tough DGW in Round 31, but favorable matchups from here on out.
