AMSTERDAM – Brad Guzan continued his Anfield Road mastery on Saturday evening, shutting out Premier League hosts Liverpool by a 1-0 count.
The former Chivas USA star required just one save to move one-third of the way to his clean-sheet total from least season, notching his third of the new league campaign. Guzan did get some late help from the post in pushing his career record at Liverpool to 2-0-1.
An early strike from Gabriel Agbonlahor was all the unbeaten Villans would need to grab second place. Guzan has allowed just one goal in four games this season, helping his team stand atop the defensive chart.
Heading to Germany, Fabian Johnson pulled double duty as unbeaten Borussia Mönchengladbach strolled to a 4-1 Bundesliga win over nearby visitors Schalke.
The US international started the game on left wing, but switched to right back at the break due to an injury shuffle. Johnson worked solidly at both stations as the Foals rose to fourth place in the table.
Finally, Sacha Kljestan remained a spectator as Belgian leaders Anderlecht settled for a 2-2 draw at Lierse. Currently seeking their first title four-peat since 1968, the Mauves overturned a halftime deficit with two goals before leaking an equalizer deep into stoppage time.
