Report: San Jose Earthquakes set to acquire Urguayan right back Pablo Pintos

Pablo Pintos (izq.) marcó el gol de la victoria 1-0 del San Lorenzo de Almaagro sobre el River Plate de Uruguay en un partido de cuartos de final de la Copa Sudamericana.

The San Jose Earthquakes have turned to South America in the hopes of finding a solution at the right back position.

According to reports in South America and reported Tuesday by the San Jose Mercury News, the Quakes have acquired Uruguayan right back Pablo Pintos (above, left). The 27-year-old defender would be the second big South American signing by the club following the acquisition of Argentinean attacker Matias Perez Garcia on July 31, and will presumably be expected to fill the hole vacated over the offseason in Steven Beitashour’s trade to the Vancouver Whitecaps.

The Quakes signed veteran German right back Andy Gorlitz in the offseason, but he suffered a season-ending knee injury in May, and the Quakes have mostly turned to MLS veterans Brandon Barklage and Shaun Francis since then.

Pintos played from 2006 to 2009 with Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting, where he started his career. He was a regular with Argentina’s San Lorenzo in 2010 before spending time in Spain with Getafe, Turkish club Kasımpaşa and back in Argentina with Tigre.
