GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Club Tijuana’s American legion will have a new coach after the international break, with Xolos naming Mexican Daniel “Travieso” Guzmán as the replacement for Venezuelan César Farías, who left by mutual consent on Saturday.
Tijuana will be the ninth club the 48-year-old Guzmán has coached in Mexico’s first division, with his most recent stints coming at Atlante and Puebla.
“I like (my teams) to play well, to win at home and away with attractive soccer,” said Guzman at his introductory press conference in Tijuana on Monday.
Guzman’s biggest achievement as a coach was winning the Clausura 2008 title with Santos Laguna, with a side that included left back Edgar Castillo.
Under the previous coach Farías, Greg Garza had been a regular starter, but Joe Corona had been in out and out the initial XI. Youngsters Paul Arriola and Alejandro Guido were also in the first team picture, but used exclusively off the bench in league matches this season.
Xolos are currently in 13th place in the Liga MX on seven points from seven games of the Apertura 2014. The team is undefeated in five league matches, but has tied the last four.
