Sonny Guadarrama celebrates a penalty kick for Atlante

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – A quartet of Americans were in action in Copa MX group-stage play on Wednesday night, highlighted by Sonny Guadarrama opening the scoring for Atlante in their 1-1 draw with Pumas UNAM at Ciudad Universitaria in both teams' tournament opener.


The Austin, Texas, native (above) stepped up and slotted a penalty into the top left corner of the net to hand Los Potros a 1-0 lead in the 31st, with Eduardo Herrera equalizing 10 minutes later for Pumas in the Group 6 clash.


Ventura, Calif., native Bernabe Magaña served as backup 'keeper for Pumas, but didn’t come off the bench.



In Group 4, Stevie Rodriguez went the full 90 minutes in midfield for Dorados de Sinaloa against Atlas’ experienced midfield duo of Juan Carlos Medina and Aldo Leao, with the second-division side losing 4-2 at Estadio Jalisco.


San Diego-born forward Bruno Piceno wore the captain’s armband for Dorados and went 64 minutes.
