US fans know Rais Mbolhi as the goalkeeper who gave up the epic Landon Donovan World Cup goal in 2010.
Now they'll learn to know him as a Philadelphia Union player.
The club on Wednesday announced the signing of the 28-year-old two-time World Cup veteran, who starred for Algeria in the most recent edition in Brazil and led his country to the knockout round for the first time ever.
Mbolhi, who most recently played for Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia, will become the Union's starter, unseating incumbent Zac MacMath, who started all 21 league matches in 2014 in front of No. 1 overall SuperDraft pick Andre Blake.
"When he's ready to go, he's our starter," said Union manager Jim Curtin in the introductory press conference. "People need to undersand that he chose Philadelphia as a city over Champions League clubs to come here and he needs to be shown a lot of love for that by our great fan base."
To make room for Mbolhi, Philadelphia waived third-stringer Brian Holt.
