American Exports: Danny Williams to miss start of Reading's season after undergoing knee surgery

Danny Williams breaks away from two defenders with Reading

AMSTERDAM – English Championship club Reading have only set a loose timetable for the return of midfield ace Danny Williams from knee surgery. The US international went under the knife last Monday and is now expected to miss several league matches.

The knee issue is the same one that kept Williams from competing for a place in Jurgen Klinsmann's 2014 World Cup squad back in May. The 23-year-old was hoping to get fit without an operation but eventually succumbed to the need.

"Obviously, losing Danny Williams this week is not ideal," Royals manager Nigel Adkins told reporters over the weekend. "He was advised to have an operation in the summer by the club. …

"The last thing you want to do is have surgery. The fact of the matter is: He's had it now, he's going to be out for several weeks, and we'll just have to deal with that. We've just got to get him back as soon as we can."

Without Williams, Reading will open the new Championship slate with an Aug. 9 visit to Wigan.
