Oguchi Onyewu trains with DC United, but no indication if he's looking to join hometown club

D.C. United have had few problems at center back this year. The veteran duo of Jeff Parke and Bobby Boswell have done admirably well, shoring up one of United's most glaring problem areas from 2013.

By the looks of it, however, United may have their eye on yet another veteran central defender: former US international Oguchi Onyewu.

The out-of-contract Onyewu is visible in one of the team's Instagram posts from earlier this week – Onyewu's towering frame is hard to miss, even when pixelated – and sources confirmed to MLSsoccer.com earlier Thursday that the central defender is indeed training with the Black-and-Red.

United captain Boswell also confirmed the presence of the two-time World Cup veteran in D.C. camp on the latest episode of the Pitch Pass podcast.

The team had no comment on the defender's presence at training, though a source close to the club suggested on Thursday that Onyewu is likely just training with the club, an arrangement that would make sense for the former QPR and Sheffield Wednesday defender.

It's not uncommon for a player based in Europe to train stateside in the offseason, though the case of Onyewu is made a bit more interesting by his local ties.

"Gooch" is a D.C. native, and has alluded to a potential homecoming with United, giving the idea that this is more of a trial than a training stint some legs.
