If you score goals, there's a decent chance you'll be in the running for an ESPY Award. Makes sense: Scoring goals is the ultimate point of the game.
On Wednesday, ESPN revealed the nominations for the Best MLS Player ESPY Award, and all four are prolific scorers.
The nominees are the New York Red Bulls' Tim Cahill, Montreal Impact's Marco Di Vaio, LA Galaxy's Robbie Keane, and the Chicago Fire's Mike Magee.
The 2014 ESPY Awards take place on July 16. They will be hosted by musician and actor Drake -- who has his own interesting connections to MLS.
Cahill, who recently completed a disapppointing World Cup with Australia -- though he scored two goals, including one for the ages -- was nominated after scoring 11 goals and posting 5 assists in 27 regular-season matches for the Red Bulls. His production was a major part of the Red Bulls winning the Supporters' Shield, the club's first-ever major silverware.
Di Vaio had one of the most remarkable seasons ever with Montreal, hitting 20 goals, all of which came from the run of play. He finished third in the rankings for the MLS Budweiser Golden Boot in 2013.
Keane played fewer games in 2013 than he did in 2014, but actually increased his production, scoring 16 goals and posting 11 assists on the year.
Magee had the best campaign of them all. Traded midseason from the Galaxy to the Fire, Magee went on a goal-scoring tear, firing home 21 goals in total, adding four assists, and nearly leading the Fire to a playoff spot.
The Best MLS Player ESPY was inaugurated in 2006, and to date only three players have taken home the trophy: Landon Donovan five times, David Beckham twice, and Thierry Henry, just last year.
