World Cup: Portugal's Fabio Coentrao out for tournament, Hugo Almeida, Rui Patricio also hobbled

Fabio Coentrao injured against Germany

Pepe is out against the United States with a red card, now Portugal got even worse news with two injured players:

Striker Hugo Almieda is likely out vs. the US on Sunday, as is left back Fábio Coentrão, whose World Cup is over, according to the Portuguese federation.

Coentrão was subbed off in the 65th minute against Germany in Monday's 4-0 loss with what has been diagnosed with a groin injury.

“I’m afraid that my World Cup has come to an end," the Real Madrid wingback told reporters following Monday's loss. "...These things happen in our profession and, unfortunately, today it fell to me. It’s a very sad day, one of the saddest of my life."

Almeida, meanwhile, has a left thigh injury that could keep him sidelined for the rest of the group stage, according to Portugal team doctor Henrique Jones. Both players underwent MRIs on Tuesday, as did goalkeeper Rui Patrício, who also suffered a left thigh injury.

Portugal face the USMNT on Sunday in Manaus (6 pm ET, ESPN).
