World Cup: Reported Ghana lineup vs. USMNT omits Michael Essien, Kevin-Prince Boateng

Andre Ayew, Ghana

Several media reports on Monday afternoon indicated that Ghana's starting lineup for their Group G opener against the United States (6 pm ET, ESPN, match preview) would omit noted names Kevin-Prince Boateng (Schalke) and Michael Essien (AC Milan).

According to these reports, the lineup will include Adam Kwarasey in goal, with Daniel Opare, Kwadwo Asamoah, Jonathan Mensah and John Boye along the backline. The midfield is expected to include Mohammed Rabiu, Sulley Muntari and Andre Ayew (pictured above), while Christian Atsu joins Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew up front.

Andre Ayew, Gyan and Mensah are the only holdovers from the lineup that faced the US in the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup, while Muntari played in that game as a substitute. The US are likely to have four holdovers from their starting lineup in that 2010 game: Jozy Altidore, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard.
