World Cup: FIFA suspends German legend Franz Beckenbauer for not cooperating with investigation

Franz Beckenbauer

FIFA has provisionally suspended Franz Beckenbauer, a former World Cup winner and former member of the FIFA Executive Committee, from all soccer-related activities for 90 days, it was announced during the Mexico-Cameroon match on Friday. Beckenbauer was suspended for failing to cooperate with the FIFA Ethics Committee.

Beckenbauer lifted the 1974 World Cup as captain of West Germany and also led West Germany to the 1990 World Cup title as coach. He chaired the organizing committee when Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup.

But it is his actions as a member of the Executive Committee, specifically his votes for the hosts of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, that have come into question. Beckenbauer has reportedly declined to tell FIFA ethics investigator Michael Garcia for whom he voted.
