Rarely do fans get an intimate glimpse at the personal lives of some of the biggest stars in Major League Soccer, but this week’s episode of MLS Insider is an exception.

The latest installment of the Emmy-nominated series offers an emotional look at the family life of Philadelphia Union midfielder Maurice Edu, the son of proud Nigerian parents devoted to his development both on the soccer field and in the classroom.

The episode also offers a closer look at Edu’s relationship with his father -  a former soccer player in Nigeria himself -  and how it influenced him as a young player in California, and tracks Edu’s rise from a promising youth player to college star, then a top MLS draft pick and rising star in MLS.

For more on Edu’s rise to stardom, check out MLSsoccer.com’s feature on the Union star’s return to MLS, and listen to this special edition of the ExtraTime Radio podcast with Edu discussing his return to MLS and the pitfalls for American players in Europe.

And don’t forget to check out past episodes of MLS Insider right here, including a look at the life and times of Carlos Valderrama, the role of Clint Dempsey as US captain and much, much more.
